## The switch

"Check my redirects" is a switch in Settings. Its description is the whole contract: "Rabbot reads your store's URL redirects to find ones that send visitors in a circle, and ones set on the address of a product that is still for sale. Reading changes nothing. Rabbot changes a redirect or a web address only after you confirm it on a finding, and you can undo that for 30 days."

Until you turn it on, the redirects card says "Rabbot has not read your store's redirects yet", with the switch as its one action. The switch is the read permission for your redirects, and nothing else.

A redirect is your declaration about where visitors should go. Rabbot never offers to remove or reverse one. The four cards below fix what a redirect, or a missing one, does to a page that should sell.

## A product address that shows Page not found

When a product's web address changes, Shopify usually adds the redirect from the old address itself. When it does, the finding says so and offers nothing: "This product's web address changed from /products/old to /products/new on 6 October, and visitors to the old address are sent to the new one."

When the old address shows Page not found instead, the card carries two buttons.

- **Keep the new address.** Rabbot adds a redirect from the old address to the new one. The confirmation reads "Add a redirect from /products/old to /products/new?"
- **Put back the old address.** Rabbot restores the old address and redirects the new one to it. The confirmation reads "Put back the address /products/old? Rabbot also adds a redirect from /products/new to it."

Either way you confirm first, and you can undo for 30 days. Rabbot rechecks the old address within the hour after a rename, so a redirect Shopify adds on its own closes the finding without a tap, and a redirect you add closes it the same way.

## A chain that grew a hop

"Visitors to /products/old pass through 3 redirects before they reach /products/new. Rabbot can send them straight to /products/new." The button is "Send visitors straight there", and the confirmation names both ends.

This is the one fix with no undo. Shopify does not let a redirect point at an address that is itself redirected, so the old step cannot be put back once it is gone. The card says so before you tap, and shoppers go straight to the page the chain already ended on.

## A redirect that sends visitors in a circle

"The redirect from /collections/sale sends visitors in a circle. Its destination changed from /collections/summer to /collections/sale on 6 October. Rabbot can point it back at /collections/summer." The button is "Put back the earlier destination", and the undo stays open for 30 days.

If the loop is new and Rabbot has no earlier destination on record, the card says so and points you at URL redirects in your Shopify admin instead of guessing.

## A redirect on a product still for sale

This card is a question, not a fix. "/products/blue-mug redirects to /products/blue-mug-v2, but Blue Mug is still for sale at that address, so the redirect does nothing. Which one did you mean?" Three answers:

- "Blue Mug v2 replaces it": Rabbot tells you to archive the old product in your admin, so the redirect can work. It writes nothing.
- "Keep both": the finding is dismissed as intentional.
- "The redirect is old": Rabbot leaves the redirect alone, as with every redirect you made.

The weekly digest carries the same question, so it is never lost in a busy week.

## When Rabbot makes no change

Every refusal names its reason on the card. The address already has a redirect to another page. Another product already uses that web address. The change would send visitors in a circle. One step of the chain is not in your store's URL redirects. Shopify is busy, so try again in a minute. In each case Rabbot made no change, and says so.

[Fixes you can tap](/docs/issues/fixes-you-can-tap/) covers the two taps, the undo and the write permission that every fix shares.
